Change user preferences & display settings

Customize your Start.me display settings, bookmark behavior, language & location, and keyboard shortcuts.

The User Preferences panel lets you control how Start.me looks and behaves. To open it:

  1. Open the ME menu (user-icon in the right top)

  2. Click Settings.

You can also open Display settings from the Account details page.

Settings

In Settings, you can change the following options:

  • Dark theme
Enable this setting to use the dark version of the Start.me interface.

  • Search bar (PRO)
Show or hide the main search bar on all your pages.

  • Website icons
Show or hide website icons in your bookmark and other widgets.

  • Open links in a new browser tab / window

When enabled, clicking a bookmark opens it in a new browser tab instead of navigating away from Start.me. You can also hold the Ctrl key + Click to open a link in a new tab, or the Shift key + Click to open the link in a new browser window.

  • Start with last opened page
Enable this setting to open the same page that was last open when you used Start.me.

Bookmarks settings

In Bookmarks settings, you control how bookmarks behave in your widgets:

  • Add new bookmarks to the top of a list
By default, new bookmarks are added to the bottom of a bookmark widget. With this setting enabled, newly added bookmarks are added to the top of the widget instead.

  • Show Broken Links (PRO)
Enable this setting to mark bookmarks that link to pages that are no longer available.

  • Show Duplicate Links (PRO)
Enable this setting to highlight bookmarks that appear more than once.

Location & Language

In this section, you can change the language and country used for your account.

  • Language
Select the language of the Start.me interface.

  • Country
Select your country for local content in widgets, such as news and RSS suggestions.

Note: these settings do not translate your existing pages or widgets.

Keyboard shortcuts

In the Keyboard Shortcuts section, you can view and customize the in-app shortcuts:

  • Opening the Pages menu (Windows only)

  • Opening the Search box

  • Opening the Bookmarks Inbox

Extension shortcuts

Our browser extensions add extra shortcuts (like Alt+B to bookmark any page). See Keyboard shortcuts for the full overview.
