Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I uploaded a .docx or .xlsx file to my Start.me page, but when I click it, it downloads instead of opening in Word or Excel. Why?

A: Most browsers, including Google Chrome, will automatically download Word and Excel files — even if they're correctly configured on the server to be opened (inline). This is a browser limitation, not a Start.me issue.

Q: Can I change this behavior so files open directly in Word or Excel?

A: Unfortunately, browsers don’t allow direct opening in desktop apps like Word or Excel for security reasons. However, there are a few workarounds you can use:

Recommended Workaround: Use Microsoft’s Online Viewer

If your file is publicly accessible, you can wrap your file URL using the Microsoft Office Online Viewer:

https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=YOUR_FILE_URL

Replace YOUR_FILE_URL with the direct URL to your .docx or .xlsx file. This opens the document directly in your browser without downloading it.

Q: Are there any other options?

A: Yes. You can also:

  • Upload your document to Google Drive or OneDrive, and use the shareable link they provide.

  • Use file types like PDF if you want in-browser previews (most browsers support these).
