Link to Local Files & Folders

Add bookmarks to local files and folders on your computer using the file:/// prefix.

To improve your workflow, you can add bookmarks to any local file on your computer. You'll need the latest New Tab extension to make this work, as well as Google Chrome (or Edge).

Note

The Bookmarker by Start.me extension for Chrome or Edge doesn't support this functionality.

Instructions

  1. Make sure you have installed our New Tab extension.

  2. Right-click the extension icon in your browser header and select Options. Find Allow access to file URLs and toggle it ON. You only need to do this once.

  3. Open File Explorer (Windows), right-click the file or folder, and select Copy as path.

  4. In your Bookmarks widget, click the pencil icon and add a bookmark.

  5. In the URL field, type file:/// and paste the file path. Remove any quotation marks.

  6. Click Done.

Note

Start.me only saves the link, not the file itself. Local file bookmarks won't work on other computers or devices.
