How do I link to local folders/files?

Updated over 3 months ago

To improve your workflow, you can add bookmarks to any local folder or file on your computer. You'll need the latest New Tab or Bookmarker extension to make this work, as well as Google Chrome.

Note

Before you can use this feature, you will need to enable the "Allow access to file URLs" setting from the extension settings page.

Instructions

  1. Make sure you have installed our Chrome extension.

  2. Copy and paste the following codes into the address bar, to open the Extension Settings page:

    1. New tab extension:

      chrome://extensions/?id=cfmnkhhioonhiehehedmnjibmampjiab

    2. Bookmarker extension:

      chrome://extensions/?id=obgopghdefjihikoknnjfooahlleabno

  3. Toggle the option Allow access to file URLs to ON. You only have to do this once.

  4. Now open the Explorer (Windows) and select the file or folder you want to bookmark to. Press Crtl-Shift-C to copy the path directly to your clipboard. You can also right-click and select Copy as path.

  5. Now return to your Start.me page, and click the pencil icon of the Bookmarks widget where you want to place the link.

  6. In the URL field, type in the following prefix: file:/// You use the same prefix for files and folders. Then paste the location of the file you've just copied. Make sure there are no quotes around the pasted location.

  7. Click Done to confirm.

Some example links

  • file:///C:/Folder1/Folder2/Folder3/

  • file:///C:/Folder1/Folder2/Folder3/filename.txt

  • chrome://extensions

Warning

Start.me does not save the contents of your local file, only the destination. If you use Start.me on another computer or device, you will lose access.
